Auckland Transport has been working on a $10 million extension to Medallion Drive in Albany since June 2020.

The project was expected to be complete by mid-2021, however it is now expected to open in early April, an Auckland Transport spokeswoman confirmed.

Locals on social media recently questioned why the Medallion Drive link road had not yet opened, as it had looked completed for several weeks, with minimal activity from contractors.

On Friday night, some locals got an exclusive preview, when someone took it upon themself to remove the barriers and unofficially open the road.

Auckland Transport have labelled this person's actions as "dangerous".

Neptune Calling, at the National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy in Devonport, commemorates the 80th anniversary of the sinking on HMS Neptune off the coast of Libya in 1941.

Not long before the tragedy, which claimed the lives of 150 Kiwis, the New Zealand Broadcasting Service had helped 50 of them record greetings for their loved ones at home.

These messages have now been loaded onto vintage phones, to be heard by the public for the first time.

“We feel an enormous sense of responsibility towards these very special recordings. They are a very real, tangible link to 150 young men who never made it home," said Jane Cotty, the communications manager at the museum.

“They represent an enormous loss felt at the time throughout the nation, every city and almost every town lost young men they knew and loved. This loss is still keenly felt in many families."

The exhibition will be at the museum at 64 King Edward Parade,
Torpedo Bay for the rest of 2022. For more information, visit navymuseum.co.nz...

Bin tags: Scrapping pay-as-you-throw collection 'unfair', low-waste residents say

Auckland Council’s proposal to scrap bin tags in favour of rates-funded rubbish collections has been labelled “unfair” by residents who produce very little waste.

West Auckland, North Shore and Papakura residents have been on a pay-as-you-throw system for their kerbside rubbish collection since 2017-2018.

This system was to be implemented across the region, however, Auckland Council now believes the price of bin tags will need to be much higher to incentivise residents to reduce their waste.

So, it is proposing to move the entire region to a rates-funded collection service, the price of which is determined by what size bins residents use.

The council estimates that with a standard 120 litre rubbish bin, this will cost households $314 per year, which covers rubbish, recycling and inorganic collection. In 2023, the council will also roll out a food scraps collection service, which is not optional and will bring the rate up to $375.

Birkdale residents Jacqui and Alan Vowles put their bin out about once a month. On the rates-funded model, this would cost them around $31.25 per collection, rather than the around $51 per year they currently spend on bin tags.

Jacqui Vowles said this was an exorbitant amount compared to the cost of a bin tag.

“I don’t think it’s fair at all.”
