"Technology is now the way of the world – which is daunting for seniors as we did not grow up with it like the young ones of today, so who do we go to for instructions for how to cope with it?
I strongly suggest you go to Gavin Tipping’s classes as he is a wonderful tutor and will open up a new world for you and give you the knowledge and confidence to operate your mobile phone, laptop and PC home computer.
Gavin has small classes and shares his knowledge with personal attention to make sure you understand technology and its many uses. Gavin is patient and understanding, his classes are very friendly in a relaxed comfortable setting with like-minded people who become friends.
I am amazed at how much I have learnt in a short space of time. Previously I only used my iPhone for texts and phone calls and now I have discovered and learnt how to navigate and use the various applications available. I have also broadened my knowledge and confidence with my laptop and PC computer and found that technology is not as frustrating and overwhelming for me as it had been – in fact I enjoy it! DOC is rolling out a new tool to help figure out what to tackle first when it comes to protecting our threatened species and the things putting them at risk.
Why does this matter? As Nikki Macdonald from The Post points out, we’re a country with around 4,400 threatened species. With limited time and funding, conservation has always meant making tough calls about what gets attention first.
For the first time, DOC has put real numbers around what it would take to do everything needed to properly safeguard our unique natural environment. The new BioInvest tool shows the scale of the challenge: 310,177 actions across 28,007 sites.
Now that we can see the full picture, it brings the big question into focus: how much do we, as Kiwis, truly value protecting nature — and what are we prepared to invest to make it happen?
