Takahe chicks join the family: Tiritiri Matangi Island
Both takahe pairs on Tiritiri Matangi Island have hatched chicks.
Anatori and Tussie have welcomed two chicks to the world while Edge and Turutu have one new baby at the Hauraki Gulf predator free island.
The chicks seem to be thriving but the first few months prove the most risky for chick survival.
Tiritiri Matangi Island provides a safe haven for the breeding pairs, who are helping to grow the takahē population, with the current population less than 450.
Young birds produced on the island will join the takahē breeding programme or will be released into the wild.
Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
