Since the introduction of commercial photography studios, and later Kodak cameras, art photographers have had to fight for their medium to be recognised as more than a mechanical recording device.

Depot Artspace’s adjacent galleries are dedicated to the limitless creative force of photography for another week as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography, from decomposed analogue Polaroid’s to digitally manipulated prints.

They Were Young Once brings together the works of photographers both iconic and emerging. Great artists start somewhere, and it is their commitment over time that embeds their work in our cultural psyche and sense of place.

These prints are accessibly priced thanks to the support of our friends at Soar Print, and framed works by Jae Hoon Lee and Peter Peryer have been generously loaned by Charnwood Trust.

Composition/Decomposition by Linda Jarrett examines the metamorphosis of the banal to the extraordinary by an experimental process of decaying Polaroid photographs.

Pop by this Sunday 20 June 11-3 for the final artist on site to meet the photographers. Exhibitions end next week Tuesday (They Were Young Once) & Thursday (Linda Jarrett)

A new email scam impersonating the NZTA is being sent around telling vehicle owners their licences are due.

The email directs the recipient to renew the funds through clicking a 'Renew Now' button at the bottom corner of the email. It then takes the individual to fake website that gets them to fill in personal details.

CERT NZ, the government authority responsible for cyber security said in a tweet, that anyone who receives this email should report it directly to Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

How to spot a phishing scam:
- NZTA will only send an email through if an individual has contacted them first.
- Email addresses will always end in @nzta.govt.nz, @enews.nzta.govt.nz or @reply.nzta.govt.nz.
- The email may be missing specific details that the NZTA will have on file: such as your plate number, the date your vehicle license is due and vehicle make and model.
- Hover over buttons and links to see if the pop-up will take you to a genuine government (.govt.nz) website

Neighbourly will update this message as further information comes to hand.

When you attend one of our Shorecare Clinics, our reception staff will provide you with a face mask to wear for the duration of your visit.

While mask wearing is not essential in most areas at New Zealand Alert Level 1, including most public hospitals, it remains mandatory in certain situations such as public transport. Most Auckland General Practices and Urgent Care Clinics have elected to continue mask use in order to increase the level of protection for our patients and staff from respiratory infections, including COVID-19.

We recognise that mask wearing is unpleasant for many people, but ask that you comply with this request, during this difficult time. If you are unable to wear a mask, please let the staff know and we may be able to isolate you in a vacant room, or request that you wait in your car until the doctor is ready to see you.
Thank you for your cooperation.

This incident happened on Saturday, 12 June, a J5 game of rugby, Glenfield vs Mahurangi (Warkworth).... I posted on the Mahurangi rugby facebook page but of course they quickly took it down for obvious reasons as you will read:

At the end of our son’s rugby game, a Mother came charging at my son (age 8), towered over him and told him off for how he played against her son. She didn’t like it - yet it was all legal play. When this Mother came charging at him, finger pointing and all - my son broke down sobbing. A Grandma, whose grandson plays on the same team as my son saw what was going on, rushed over, grabbed him and while hugging my son tightly she exchanged a few heated words with this Mother.

Meanwhile I was on the other side of the field and seeing what I thought was happening I strode over as a raging Lioness.

I did not swear to this Mother - as that is not the example of adult behaviour I want to set for the children around.

I did not make threats to this Mother, as to why she couldn’t have approached the Parent rather than attack a child to resolve her obvious frustration.

But I raised my voice for all to hear to point out that this is not the type of sportsmanship we should be displaying to our children.

It is not ok for another parent to run down into sobbing tears another child! Kids have come to play to have fun and learn what it means to be a good team player.

Parents - if you don’t like to see your child being tackled, rammed over, pushed and shoved - all legally, then you need to check yourself and stay away from the kids games. When your child cries because he was pushed or shoved then you empower them by encouragement showing love and to be strong but not turnaround and go after the child that played him.

To the Mother who came at my child….Did you think that I would allow you to treat my child in such a manner? Therefore unravelling my parenting of teaching him to respect all? you belittled him in front of other children and parents, so did you really think I would just stand back and allow your actions to be tolerated?

You do not know of the sensitivity and low self esteem of my child which we work hard to build on day after day… You do not know our son has been diagnosed with APD and that this is his first time ever playing rugby so this is a big deal for him! You came after a child and did not consider his make-up and the damage you may have caused, all because you could not handle seeing your child being schooled in rugby.

Why then did you try to blend in with your crowd of supporters when you heard me singing (roaring) about your despicable behaviour and not come at me the way you came at my child?

You are a Mother…. I too am a Mother …. I could have reacted differently I could have justifiably reacted quite violently but that is not my make-up. I would never lower my crown to such a low level and then how would that impact on your child?

Your behaviour did not give me the chance to calm myself down and think rationally on how to approach this situation especially when you rampaged at my son.

I hope you learn from this incident, I hope you do not react like this in future games because I can’t guarantee another Mother would not react non-violently to how you broke my son down.

Next time, approach adult to adult not adult to child. We want to be great examples to our Tamariki they deserve that much!

I will continue to teach and raise my son to become a man to respect all. To become a man who will not allow this incident scar him from the kiwi game of rugby. I will remind him to handle such matters where he is to ask them to STOP, WALK away and TELL someone. I will continue to teach him to be strong and never let anyone tell him he is a failure! He will be strong to face all that life will come at him, why? because he is being raised by a strong phenomenal Queen of a Mother who will support her child - in the best way that will empower him and his team mates!

Woodall Park BMX Pump Track
20 June at 11am

Woodall Park near the Squash Club

WHAT WILL THE TRACK BE LIKE?

It will be a 400 metres long unpaved BMX track through the trees at the western end of Woodall park, Narrow Neck. The design allows for it to be built in stages.

It’ll be suitable for all ages and abilities of riders: from young learners to older ‘full-on’ awesome riders.

WHERE IS THE PROJECT AT?

The pump track through the trees was started by local kids through the trees. Devonport Rotary approached the Council and Local Board who have enthusiastically endorsed the project and are assisting with resource consent. A lease change of the Waitemata Golf Club has made available the land under the trees to become part of Woodall Park

Local cycling enthusiast Tim White has offered lots of practical advice on track layouts and other technical matters.

WHEN WILL IT START AND HOW YOU CAN HELP?

Rotary is confident that the resource consent will be granted soon and now want to start the planning for getting construction underway in the spring. Rotary has some funds available but needs the help of local volunteers and sponsors who can help with

• fundraising e.g setting up a Givealittle page

• working bees

• sponsorship.

• donations of materials.

• Applying for grants from charitable trusts

a GiveaLittle page

Come along to the information day to share your ideas on how we can make this community asset a real taonga for our children (of all ages).
