What a tradition Round the Bays is. As an Aucklander I'm proud to know it endures - like Santa parades - as a true Auckland event on the cultural calendar.

Barrel-chested, straight-shooting Lydiard, who lived in Clovelly Road, Bucklands Beach, made Round the Bays possible. Decades earlier, the legendary runner and coach - of Sir Peter Snell, Sir Murray Halberg, John Davies, Barry Magee, Bill Baillie and many more - had scientifically proven by endless running and medical testing that jogging was good for one's health and well-being.

That started a craze that saw many out pounding the pavements. Round the Bays was created to bring them together once a year to celebrate the joy of running in a beautiful place. Pace yourselves...
