A big welcome to Auckland's first Chinese councillor
Entrepreneur Paul Young has won Auckland Council's Howick ward by-election, to become the city's first Chinese councillor.
Young, who arrived in Auckland in 1989, won by a margin of 1698 votes in a low-turnout poll with provisional figures showing 26.4 per cent of people voted.
He provisionally gained 7293 votes, ahead of local board member Jim Donald on 5595, former local journalist Phil Taylor on 5285, and Damian Light on 5222. Read more of the story here.

Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
