New Zealand's small businesses have had another tough few weeks. We're calling on you, wherever you are across the country, to recognise a local business making a difference in your community.

We all love a cheeky grin and a wave from our local grocer, or a toot from the delivery driver, or a coffee order that’s ready before we arrive. These are the business owners who remind us we're home.

Give your favourite local business owner the recognition they deserve by nominating them in the 2023 Prospa Local Business Hero awards.

Auckland Emergency Services are asking people to stay away from West Coast beach communities which are trying to recover from last week’s storm.

What you need to know:
- The affected beaches are Piha, Karekare, Bethells, Muriwai, Huia and Little Huia
- The beaches have been closed to non-residents only
- The closures are for safety and to ensure road repairs can take place

“While there is road access into Piha, it’s limited and we’re asking people not to go to Piha to go surfing or picnicking, I know we may have a fine weekend coming up but to stay away out of respect for those communities,” Duty controller Mace Ward says.

If you are wanting to check swimming conditions in other areas of Auckland, check the SwimSafe site.

Calling all biodiversity and conservation enthusiasts in Tāmaki Makaurau! We’re hosting our first BioBlitz at our Ōtehā campus on Saturday 4 March.

The goal of a BioBlitz is to identify and record as many species of plants and animals as possible within an assigned timeframe. The event will provide an exciting opportunity for the community to come together and learn more about the biodiversity of the significant ecological bush area that backs onto our Auckland campus.

The event runs from 8am to 10pm, with the meeting point at the Sir Neil Waters lecture theatre. The day will include guided walks through the bush, including a night walk in the evening, talks by science experts around collecting and interpreting the results of the environmental DNA (eDNA) captured and food trucks, along with face painting and bouncy castles on campus for the tamariki.
