Thanks to the brave and quick actions of these members of the public (pictured centre and centre right) – an offender who was trying to make a getaway after stealing money from a Henderson dairy was stopped and swiftly arrested. 👏

Earlier this month, one of the owners of the store was working behind the counter when a man entered the store and demanded money.

He walked behind the counter to the cash register and took a large sum of money, but the owner very quickly managed to activate the anti-theft smoke canon and the offender fled the shop.

Seeing what happened, the members of the public chased the offender and caught him, holding him until Police arrived soon afterwards.

He was then arrested and taken into custody.

A 40-year-old man has been charged with theft and was due to appear in the Waitakere District Court last week.

The money taken was returned to the dairy owners (pictured on the left), who were very grateful to those who stepped in to help.

A great result and example of people going above and beyond to look out for people in their local community.

We'd love to hear about the great places you've discovered over your summer holidays, whether it's somewhere local or on a trip away. Did you come across a particularly amazing beach, camping ground, town, walk or scenic spot? What made it so special? Any activities or places to eat and drink you can recommend in the area would also be much appreciated. We helped them remove lots of moth plant and woolly nightshade and started on some privet. Hopefully those people prone to asthma and privet allergies will sleep a bit better. We also cleared wild ginger and other weeds from the reserve behind Taurus Cres.
But there's still a lot of moth plant and woolly nightshade - some behind a locked gate. Please email PestPlants@pestfreekaipatiki.org.nz if we missed yours and you need help with it. Get rid of them before the seed mature and spread.
Please email us too if you know of moth plant flowers coming out now - help us control the vines before the nasty pods form.

There's a lot of privet trees around Taurus Cres - we are wondering about a community working bee one weekend in 2021. If you'd be interested please let us know (same email as above). Privet blossom makes some people really miserable - so even if you don't suffer yourself, please get in touch.

For more info about controlling pest plants in your street or your local park, go to www.pestfreekaipatiki.org.nz... - click on the link below to the Forest & Bird Weed Control Guide. Next Monday will be the last hit squad for 2020 - if you can see any big moth plant sites in flower, please email the location to us or report it on the EcoTrack app.

It took more than three hours to retrieve the 7-week-old kitten from the drain, which proved tricky to access due to it sloping beneath the curb. Firefighters couldn't get into the drain, so had to create a platform for the kitten, which was eventually coaxed out with some food. The male kitten is now being cared for by the SPCA where he will be desexed and put up for adoption.
