Having money problems? Here's what you can do

Hira Siddiqui from Citizens Advice Bureau Pakuranga/Eastern Manukau

There are a number of supports available to help people who are struggling with debt or inadequate income. If you’re in this situation, you might be entitled to some assistance.

📌 If you have lost your job or are unable to work, you may be eligible for a benefit from Work and Income.

Work and Income also provide financial assistance for people in work or not on a benefit who are struggling to cover basic costs. Work and Income may help with costs such as dental treatment, power bills, food, school costs, bond for your landlord etc.

If you have children, you can check you are getting your correct entitlement through Inland Revenue (IRD) - such as FamilyBoost or Working for Families.

If you have health or disability costs, you may qualify for assistance from Work and Income to help cover these costs e.g. through a Community Services card, Pharmaceutical Subsidy card, Total Mobility Card etc.

Other costs you may be able to get help with (whether that's through Work and Income, Inland Revenue, your service provider, or another source) include accommodation costs, funeral costs, student loan repayments, and credit contracts debt.

👉 If you need immediate emergency assistance with food or other essentials, you can contact the CAB, and a volunteer will put you in touch with appropriate services. Call our free phone number 0800 367 222, contact us via our website cab.org.nz or visit your local CAB (no appointment needed).

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Environmental Protection Authority announced this week that a proposed mine in Central Otago (near Cromwell) is about to enter its fast-track assessment process. A final decision could come within six months, and if it’s approved, construction might start as early as mid-2026.
