Volunteers with Auckland Coastguard have been recognised at this year’s New Zealand Search and Rescue Awards held at Parliament this week.

Congratulations to Jo Norgrove who received a Certificate of Achievement for her services to Coastguard and Search and Rescue.

Auckland Coastguard was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Operational Activity for their involvement in the rescue of a badly injured yachtsman near Waiheke Island in March last year.

Coastguard Auckland volunteers Chris Griggs and Lynne Jacobsen received the award on behalf of the rest of the unit at the awards ceremony held in Wellington.

Griggs says it was an honour to accept the award on behalf of the unit.

“This rescue was a real team effort,” says Griggs. “We had no idea of the severity of the man’s injuries at first but once on scene we worked hard to bring the situation under control and provide as much comfort and pain relief as possible.”

On the night of the rescue, the Coastguard Auckland unit responded to the yachtsman ’s distress call who was badly burned after being engulfed in flames on board his vessel. Coastguard Auckland unit vessels, ASB Rescue and Li on Foundation Rescue, were tasked to locate and assist the casualty and then to transfer the yachtsman to the nearest land point where an ambulance and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were waiting.

Griggs boarded the yacht to find the man sitting in the shower under the running water in an attempt to ease the discomfort from his burns. “The fire had caused significant burns to his arms, h ands and lower body. He had done the right thing by sitting under the cold water but in doing so had started to go hypothermic and was in immense pain,” says Griggs.

Once on board Lion Foundation Rescue, the man was carefully transferred to emergency services waiting onshore.

The judges said the Coastguard volunteers used their skills in a “highly stressful situation” where time was of the essence. By preventing further injury to the victim , the volunteers improved his chances of survival and recovery.

Auckland Coastguard relies on donations and sponsorship to deliver on our mission of "Saving lives at sea." If you can support us in any way, please get in touch with Owen Harrison on 09 303 9366 or owen@auckland-coastguard.org.nz

In a pre-Budget announcement today, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced $95 million would go towards a range of initiatives to address the teacher shortage. The initiatives will add 2480 more teachers and support a total of 3280 teachers over the next four years, and will include incentives such as scholarships and contributions to the cost of living for students. "Our commitment towards thousands of additional teachers will be a shot in the arm to our schools," Hipkins said in a statement.
Budget 19 funds 2480 additional trainee teacher places through:
=====================================================
• 1860 TeachNZ scholarships - fees and living costs for trainees studying in hard to staff subject areas,
• 300 Teach First NZ places to recruit graduates and professionals into low decile secondary schools where they teach while completing a postgraduate degree,
• 240 places in a new employment-based teacher education programme for secondary teachers, and
• 80 iwi-based scholarships.

It also supports 800 more beginning teachers into their first roles through the National Beginning Teacher Grant and the Voluntary Bonding Scheme expansion. Earlier this year there was an increase in students going into the teaching profession, following a disastrous 43 per cent slump in the six years to 2016. That six-year slump has led to a record teacher shortage which the Government has filled by bringing in 225 foreign teachers. Almost one in every six Auckland schools started the school year this year with teaching vacancies. "Schools are crying out for more teachers," Hipkins said. "More teachers will help with the quality of teaching and education our children receive. "The funding also supports strengthened Teaching Council requirements that will improve teaching quality such as the increased length of student placements in schools and are expected to lead to better preparation of graduating teachers." The Government will also partner with iwi to address the shortage of teachers skilled in te reo Māori through regional scholarships for Māori students to train and remain in the profession.
Hipkins also released an Education Workforce Strategy, led by a group of sector leaders, to define the role of teachers, technology and support systems to the year 2032.
Breakdown of the funding:
=====================
• Development of more employment-based initial teacher education (ITE) for secondary: $11.7m
• Teach First NZ for secondary schools: $16.2m
• Support for ITE providers to meet new and strengthen Teaching Council requirements: $24.6m
• Returning New Zealand and overseas Trained Teacher Recruitment support for secondary and primary teachers: $5.9m
• Overseas Relocation Grant for secondary and primary teachers: $6.6m
• Finders Fee for secondary and primary schools: $2.4m
• Expanded TeachNZ scholarships Fund for primary and secondary: $13.3m
• Expanded Bilingual Education Award for primary and secondary: $720,000
• Co-design of Iwi Based Scholarships Programme for primary and secondary: $800,000
• National Beginning Teacher Induction Grant for secondary and primary schools: $4m
• Voluntary Bonding Scheme expansion: $4.2m
• Reach and Engagement to implement Teacher Supply Initiatives: $2.3m
• Analysis and evaluation: $2.4m
Total: $95m

There is an article on page 8 in this week's Western Leader regaling the latest and very exciting 'Game changing prostate treatment' - see pic attached.
Now, I am honestly very excited for this as it is indeed a game changer.
I wish it was there for the relatives I have lost through this horrible disease.
Where I start to get a bit annoyed is it is really incredulous how fast the medical professionals, scientists etc ... have moved to find a 'cure' for a male disease.
Yet so many women are still waiting for a cure or at the very least drugs that are funded to be made available i.e. breast cancer, cervical cancer to name just 2.
Yet, in this day & age, we will continue to wait and will possibly die 😢
