Need help with paying power bills?
š„¶š§£š§ Winter is just around the corner, and the cost of power is increasing. There are supports available to help with the cost of power bills.
If you are receiving a Work and Income benefit (including NZ Superannuation or Veteranās Pension), you will automatically receive the Winter Energy Payment. This is around $20 to $30 per week, depending on whether you are single or a couple and whether you have dependent children. It is paid from 1 May until 1 October.
You may be eligible for help from Work and Income to pay for an urgent bill if you have no other way of covering it ā even if you are not receiving a benefit. Work and Income can give you up to $200 to help with an outstanding bill, or to reconnect your electricity or gas. They can also help with the cost of bedding, blankets, curtains or heaters. Depending on your situation, you may have to pay the money back.
You may also be eligible for the Power Credits Scheme. It is for helping those affected by the phase-out of low-user charges, to help cover the extra cost of power. Eligible households can receive a $110 credit every year, and those using a budgeting service can receive an extra $110 (a total of $220 per year). To be eligible, you must be struggling to pay your energy bills, you must have been on a low-user fixed charge for at least six months, and your power retailer must be a member of the scheme.

Secure your homes over summer
Police are reminding people to keep their homes secure during the summer months.
Inspector Glenda Barnaby, Christchurch Area Prevention manager, says daytime burglaries are just as common as nightime burglaries.
āBurglaries can be committed at any time of the day, and coming into warmer months there is more opportunity for thieves."
"Although a majority of burglaries involve forced entry through windows and doors, we are starting to see more incidents at insecure premises. Police deal with cases where burglaries are committed in broad daylight, sometimes even while the victim is at home. Good weather means open doors and windows, which makes homes more vulnerable to burglars.ā
Inspector Barnaby says thereās a few things people can do to reduce their changes of a burglary being committed.
ā ļø If youāre going outside for gardening, relaxing in the sun, or working in the garage, take a moment to lock your doors and secure your windows first.
ā ļø Do the same at night when you go to bed - keep your doors and windows secure and close your curtains. Fitting window stays means you can get a breeze coming through, while keeping your windows secure.
ā ļø Get to know your neighbours - let them know if youāre going away and look out for one another.ā
If you see any suspicious activity, people or vehicles in your neighbourhood, don't hesitate to contact Police.
If you witness or suspect any illegal activity, please call 111 if it is happening now, or make a report through 105 either online or over the phone, if it is after the fact.
