Morrin Cooper paying homage to one of his influences, the late-great Chet Baker, extraordinary trumpet player, jazz composer and vocal stylist of the US. No one sounds like Chet Baker. Morrin Cooper, too.
Morrin was of course our much-loved Mayor of Howick from 1974 to 1989 (retired undefeated after five terms), and many will know he’s been a professional musician, too, since the 1950s.
He tells of tours in the great days of live concert-hall shows, such as trumpeting in the band that backed The Platters in 1959.
The photo is of Morrin at the commemoration plaque of where Chet Baker died. It’s in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He passed out of a hotel window two storeys up. Morrin went to the room.
The picture of the two great trumpeters is in the Bill Mudgway Studio at East FM, where Morrin Cooper has the highly-recommended Howick-Citing Jazz Show on Sundays at 11am and Mondays at 2pm. The show would be in its 13th year.
Howick-Citing was also the title of Morrin’s magic jazz group back in the day. He’s also a past-president and life member of the Auckland branch of the NZ Musicians Union, ex-chairman-manager of the Tauranga Big Band, and chair of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation in Auckland.
Readers may have noticed, too, that our Morrin has popped up in a bank ad on television recently. “Hello, matey”, he says.
The other photo here is of Morrin with another amazing New Zealand trumpet player, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Finn Scholes, after Finn's gig with Carnivorous Plant Society at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick in recent years.

Wikipedia says of Chet Baker:
Chesney Henry “Chet” Baker Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. He’s known for major innovations in cool jazz that led him to be nicknamed the "Prince of Cool".
Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals: Chet Baker Sings (1954) and It Could Happen to You (1958). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one".

The University of Auckland Audiology Section is offering FREE hearing tests for adults with hearing loss at Grafton Campus (opposite Auckland Hospital) for 4 weeks from mid July to mid August. This is the last opportunity to secure a FREE appointment this year.
These appointments are being offered as part of the training programme for Master of Audiology students. All appointments are 90 minutes in duration as they are complete diagnostic evaluations, not screening tests. Assessments will be conducted by first year Master of Audiology students under the full supervision of senior Audiologists. All volunteers will get a full explanation of their test results on the day, a copy of the results to take with them and some advice on the next steps if any follow up appointments are required.
Free parking is available if required. We are also close to public transport routes.
If you or someone you know is concerned about their hearing and would like to take up this opportunity, please fill out the patient information sheet which is embedded in the attached flyer and e-mail it to clinics@auckland.ac.nz. The clinic will then contact you to make an appointment.
This is a limited time opportunity, so please get in touch ASAP to avoid disappointment, if you’d like to take part. Please feel free to pass this invitation onto anyone you know who may be interested in assisting us with our student teaching.

Claudia will join us in the studio from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, to talk about Sing for the Sea – Little Wild Ocean Friends (Little Wild Music), and if we’re really well-behaved, she’ll play a song or two live.
The Cockle Bay mum and songwriter says the 24-song collection is a deep dive into the theme of sea life and conservation.
“Children’s connection to the oceans and the little, the wild and the gentle giant creatures that call it home.
“There are songs of ferries and tugboats, glow in the dark sea life, escaping octopus, and saving our ocean from plastic,” says Claudia.
“Styles include gentle seashore lullabies, sandcastle rock ’n rollers, rollicking sea shanties, mirror ball dance parties and everything in between.”
A true story brought to life in song is of Inky the Octopus, who escaped from Napier Aquarium in 2016, and now stars in his own theme tune, after many children's books have detailed the escapade.
Sing for the Sea – Little Wild Ocean Friends is produced by Tom Fox at The Sound Room, illustrated by Howick mum Elise De Silva, and a matching songbook is authored by Claudia’s sister Melissa R Gunn.
Funded by Creative New Zealand, the album was produced entirely at distance to mitigate Covid delays and lockdowns throughout its year in making.
The She’ll Be Right Show with PJ beams out of East FM, East Auckland’s community-powered public service radio station, on local frequencies 88.1FM and 107.1FM, nationally and globally at www.eastfm.nz... and on app iHeart Radio.
East FM is proudly the official broadcaster for www.howick175.co.nz... and in keeping with the theme of celebrating our local achievers, we’re hearing Claudia Robin Gunn’s musical story on Saturday.
There are very favourable reviews of Little Wild Ocean Friends:
‘Featuring vocals that elevate her modern take on folk music, Gunn’s voice is at times almost ethereal, making it the perfect companion to lyrics that tell the tale of creatures found deep in the ocean. Each track has its own story to tell and is strengthened by the intentional way that each song focuses on only one creature or aspect of the watery environs. Animals spotlighted include whales, squid, octopus, and jellyfish, while rock pools, seaweed, and coral reefs are also shown special treatment. Although each song is packed with scientific facts, they are consistently entertaining and never feel didactic.’ - (Veronica De Fazio - Kids Rhythm and Rock)
‘If Florence and the Machine recorded an album of songs about the ocean and conservation, it would probably sound like Claudia Robin Gunn’s new collection.’ - (Jeffrey Cohen - Mr Jeff 2000)
‘One of the wonders of this collection of songs (as well as the music she’s written that has come before it), is that she could easily fit in the canon of great women songwriters before her: Sarah McLaughlin, Taylor Swift, Imogen Heap. Claudia Robin Gunn has the privilege of not only being a killer songwriter, but also of living on the beautiful sea-surrounded island of New Zealand. This is an album children around the world need and would love to hear.’ - (Greg Walker - Prism Reviews)
