Phone scam warning

Fredericka from Highland Park

Today I received a call to my landline from someone who claimed he worked for Spark.

He told me that they could see on their system that there are 9 devices connected at that moment and suggested that I switch the modem off and on again. I told him that can't be.
He then asked if I gave my wifi password out to any friends or family. (If I told him the number of devices that connects to my wifi, and confirmed that they don't belong to friends or family visiting, I would be telling him how many devices I OWN)
He wanted to know if I had a computer and if I was able to log on.

In between his fishing for details, I asked him to confirm what connection I have at my house (meaning ADSL, VDSL, or Fibre). He couldn't answer that. I also asked him to confirm that he worked for Spark by giving me my account number or the name that the account is in. He told me that he can't disclose that due to confidentiality. THE GUY PHONED MY HOME PHONE ABOUT MY INTERNET, YET REFUSED TO GIVE ME MY ACCOUNT DETAILS.

When he asked me if I could go to my computer to log on, I said no. And then he asked if I had a computer I said no. So he hung up.

I called the number back that he called on and kept getting an engaged signal.
The number is 077869647

I then called Spark and they confirmed that:
1) No Spark representitive phoned me
2) Spark has no way of knowing when a customer is having internet issues until the customer phones them. Therefore they don't call customers to notify them of such issues.

A Spark Call Investigation Team confirmed that the number used by the suspicious caller had never been reported before and may be a disposable number that was made up. The number I gave Spark is the number that showed on my handset's caller ID.
The Spark rep informed me that this is a phishing scam where if people co-operate, they will get those people to log into their computers and by following prompts, give the criminal access to their interent connection where they would be able to access personal information like bank accounts.

The advice given by Spark Call Investigation Team is to hang up on the call. You can call Spark and report it so that they can block the number.

Poll: Should you ask before planting tall shrubs/trees near your property line?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

It may be fine now but in a few years trees can block out light or views for neighbours.

Do you think neighbours should ask before they go ahead and plant these?
