Police warn public in Fraud Awareness Week

Caryn Wilkinson Reporter from Community News

Police are urging members of the public to be vigilant as Fraud Awareness Week kicks off today.

They are warning people against giving out personal information over the phone to strangers.

Every year thousands of New Zealanders fall victim to scams- online, over the phone or in person.

Phone scams are common.

Scammers posing as Spark workers stole $10000 from the bank account of 80-year-old Auckland resident Marion.

After following their instructions on the phone, she received a bank alert about the large withdrawal.

Have you been the victim of a phone scam?

If so, what happened?
