Hi Neighbours

Our littlest people need your help. Poverty doesn’t start at 5, but until now there’s been no nationwide programme to help preschoolers who are hungry and cold.

KidsCan is changing that. They’re delivering raincoats, shoes and five fresh meals a week to 25 early childhood centres. Attendance is up, and the children are happier and more settled.

"Everyone has the same meal so children don't feel like they have less," Manaia View Kindergarten teacher Kathy Belz says. "It's upholding everyone's mana.”

40 more centres are waiting for help. KidsCan, Stuff and Neighbourly have partnered up to raise enough money to support 1000 more children - and we need 400 more generous Kiwis to hold little hands. To support a child, sign up at KidsCan.org.nz

I escalated this to Auckland Transport last week after a number of incidents and traffic holdups due to parked cars blocking access around the refuge. The paintwork was in the original plan but hadn't been done. Thanks Auckland Transport for getting the contractor to sort this out so quickly :)

Yesterday I attended the the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw hearing panel deliberations as they discussed the large amount of public feedback on the various proposals.
Discussions included:
* accepting the proposed prohibited areas at Onepoto Domain and Chelsea Estate Heritage Park;
* extending the proposed prohibited area at Hinemoa Park;
* accepting the proposed self-contained freedom camping area at Birkenhead War Memorial Park (Mahara Ave carpark);
* moving the proposed non-self-contained freedom camping area at Little Shoal Bay (Dudding Park Sportsfield carpark) a little further south from the frequently flooded area. This proposal is to be discussed again later.

Deliberations continue next Friday, before recommendations are made back to the Regulatory Committee, after which the bylaw will be voted on by councillors.
The hearing panel members are: Clr Linda Cooper, Clr Penny Hulse, and IMSB Member Hon. Tau Henere.
