This is how quickly moth plant and woolly nightshade can spoil your land!
Yesterday, 10 volunteers covered a range of moth plant sites reported by the PFK buffer team in the area north of Eskdale Reserve in Brunton Place, Valley View Road, Seaview Road, Stephanie Close, etc.
Then we all headed off to a massive site in James St covered in moth plant, woolly nightshade, jasmine and wisteria.
The last 2 or 3 years we got there after the pods had burst - it was a nightmare. There were pods up in the powerlines. It was still bad again and we only got part way through it.
Today, a tenant contacted the owner - a wonderful helpful man who'll meet with us this weekend to talk how to solve the problem on an ongoing basis. He'd like to plant natives to bring back the native birds. And we met a neighbour nearby who wants to do the same. A wonderful outcome. This is what the PFK Restoration project is all about. People working together to restore our natural heritage.
If you see the pink and white flowers of moth plant vines in your garden, your neighbours' or in a public space, don't mess around. Help get rid of it before pods form and create an expensive mess to deal with.
Either pull/dig it our by the roots or please email us at PestPlants@pestfreekaipatiki.org.nz with the street address and other details (including if you can the contact details for the owner/occupant so we can get permission in advance).
Next week the PFK Pest Plant Hit Squad will be at Monarch Ave and other parts of Hillcrest.
Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
