"Torture ship" to receive 21-gun salute in Devonport on Friday
Hi neighbours. Chilean Training Ship Esmeralda will arrive at the Devonport Naval Base at 9am on Friday and will fire a 21-gun salute "in recognition of New Zealand's Queen and the country".
The Royal New Zealand Navy will return a salute to honour the Chileans. However, the ship has been described as a "floating jail" and "torture chamber" by former prisoners, who described being tortured by electric prods, being hung by the feet, dumped into water and excrement, and given electric shocks to their testicles.
The NZDF said the best places for the public to view the salutes were along Queens Parade or the Devonport Wharf.
Do you think a ship with a torturous past should be allowed to dock in New Zealand? Will you go and watch the salutes? Let us know in the comments.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
