Freedom Camping to be allowed on all roads, if councillors approve the revised Freedom Camping Bylaw.
The Freedom Camping hearing panel deliberations continued today, and legal opinion is that they are unable to include a "General Rule" to restrict freedom camping from all roads and other areas not specifically mentioned in the proposed bylaw. This is because the Regulatory Committee chose to exclude it from the public consultation process. In order to include it, they would need to go out for public consultation again, which would not likley happen until next year.
The implication of this is that if councillors adopt the Freedom Camping Bylaw as recommended by the Hearing Panel, any area not specified by the bylaw, or does not already have parking restrictions (such as broken yellow lines), will be opened up to freedom camping.
One exception to the above in the Kaipatiki area is a few streets around Onepoto Domain, as a large number of submitters asked for the park prohibition to be extended to nearby roads.

This is a fantastic win for the community who submitted overwhelmingly to prohibit freedom camping due to a range of concerns including the regular flooding of the site.
HOWEVER one of the members of the hearing panel, Tau Henere, walked out on the hearing process after stating that he had changed his mind on freedom camping in general and was now opposed to it! He then took offence to a comment from Chair Linda Cooper that he'd supported freedom camping while in government. The hearing deliberation process continued without him.

Last year alone, 427 serious injuries claims were made to ACC because of crashes and driving incidents over this long weekend.

Let's make sure we all arrive alive to where we need to go by following these four simple and proven road safety actions:

- Make sure everyone has their seatbelts on
- Remove distractions and stay focused on driving
- Don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or are tired
- Drive at a safe speed for the conditions

With severe and changeable weather forecast for across the country the following winter driving tips are equally important as well.

The only way we can reduce unnecessary road deaths and injuries is by working together to be safe, considerate and alert on the roads. If you spot dangerous driving behaviour or urgent but not life threatening driving incidents you can report it to the New Zealand Police by calling *555 for free from any mobile device.

Have a great long weekend!

"The price of water will increase by 2.5 per cent from $1.517 to $1.555 (including GST) per 1,000 litres and the price of wastewater services will increase by an average of 3.3 per cent."
"We are planning to spend $5.5 billion on upgrading and expanding our infrastructure over the next 10 years. About 70 per cent of the funding will come from our water and wastewater charges, with the rest coming from infrastructure growth charges and borrowings.”
