Commuters to face new layout: Rosedale

North Shore motorists are advised to allow more time for travel ahead of a new road layout in Rosedale.

Opening this weekend, the new Paul Matthews Rd will join the SH18 Caribbean Drive intersection overnight on Friday as part of the Northern Corridor Improvements project.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Senior Manager Project Delivery Andrew Thackwray said people should allow extra time while they get used to the new layout.

“We’re advising people to plan their journeys as delays are expected during this busy time of the year," Thackwray said.

"This is a significant change to how people move around the area so they need to be patient while everyone adjusts.”

The biggest change is that people must turn right much earlier on SH18 westbound to access Paul Matthews Rd and the Rosedale industrial area.

The old intersection and right turn off the state highway will close permanently.

Commuters are encouraged to avoid SH18 and use SH1 instead, especially during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Motorists heading to Rosedale can exit at the SH1 Greville Road off-ramp.

Waka Kotahi will monitor the traffic signals and queues at the intersection in real time and change the signal phases to help improve traffic flows.

People should consider using public transport to travel to Albany Station and Westfield Albany Mall, especially during late night Christmas shopping hours.

The new layout includes a new walking and cycling path on Paul Matthews Rd that will connect to shared paths on Caribbean Drive and SH18.

The road will be in a temporary layout until further new connections and ramps open mid next year, eventually connecting SH18 to the Northern Motorway.

What do you think of the new layout?

Hi Auckland,

Would you be put off by a health warning at your favourite swimming spot?

Around 100 popular swimming locations across the country have been slapped with health warnings for the summer season.

Local councils reported long-term poor water quality due to the presence of algal blooms and high concentrations of sediment in popular swimming spots like Lake Rotorua, Waikanae Beach and Paraparaumu Beach. Other sites have had consistently scored so low that local councils have stopped monitoring them and have instead posted long-term warning signs against swimming there.

Swimmers that ignore signs risk gastrointestinal illnesses and respiratory diseases from water made unsafe by farm runoff, sewage contamination and high bacteria counts.

Share your thoughts below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comments featured in the conversations section of your local paper.

Hi - do you live in the area around Taurus Crescent, Gemini Place and Rangatira Reserve?

Pest Free Kaipatiki will be in your area for two events in the next few days:

On Sunday 13 December, the Rangatira Reserve restoration group will meet at 10am to hand weed the area in the reserve where native planting was done earlier this year. If you want to know more please follow the contact details below.

On Monday 14 December, the Pest Free Kaipatiki Hit squad will be visiting Taurus Cres and Gemini Place from 9.30am and can help you control pest plants at your place or across your back fence in the reserve.

Please check your section - particularly along the boundary - and your street for the weeds shown in the flyer below - especially moth plant and woolly nightshade - which are both allergenic. They will soon be seeding - it's quickest and most effective to control them now before they spread more widely around our homes and parks.

Take this opportunity to talk with your neighbours to get on top of these pest plants. For more information about how you can tackle weeds on your property or street, go to this website: www.pestfreekaipatiki.org.nz...

If you see these weeds, follow the guidelines in the flyer below. Or if you can't deal with them, please send details of the street address and location to PestPlants@pestfreekaipatiki.org.nz - if possible please talk to the land owner or occupant and give us their contact details.

And if you are free on Monday mornings, please come along and join us - we'd love to work with you to help make your neighbourhood more eco-friendly and beautiful. It's a great way to keep fit, meet good people and help to improve your environment. Ring 021-240-9414 for details

Most of our volunteers will be working hi-vis jackets with "Pest Free Kaipatiki" on the back. But if you have any questions about what our volunteers are doing, please phone us.

And don't forget if you want to control rats and possums, see the page www.pestfreekaipatiki.org.nz...

Help keep Beach Haven & Birkdale pest plant and predator free.
