Support CHERPA's efforts to protect Chelsea Estate - come to our Public Meeting and AGM

Pam from Birkenhead

Hello Kaipātiki community,

Our group CHERPA has been spending a lot of time investigating why Chelsea Estate Heritage Park's maintenance and management has fallen below par. We are holding a Public Meeting AGM on Tues August 20 and invite local residents and park users to come hear what is being done to address maintenance of lakes, landfill, stormwater, heritage assets, parkland, forests and bush - and why we think a Local Parks Management Plan will not be enough to protect or improve Council's poor maintenance record to date.

What: CHERPA AGM & Public Meeting
When: Tuesday Aug 20, 7-9pm
Where: Northcote Birkenhead Yacht Club (NBYC) clubrooms, Birkenhead Wharf, Hinemoa St

Please RSVP by 5pm Tues 13 August to cherpa.nz@gmail.com, or contact Pam on 021 643 866 for more information.

Membership to CHERPA is free for first year, then $5 per annum. Donations welcome.

Background...

Chelsea Regional Park Assn Inc. (CHERPA, founded c.1997) is a residents group. We advocate for the protection and restoration of Chelsea Estate Heritage Park (CEHP).

Auckland Council has shelved the management plan for TEN years to address issues with landfill and stormwater infrastructure. After CHERPA and other residents raising this with KLB in 2017, AC are now preparing the Kaipatiki Local Parks Management Plan to update all Kaipātiki's park Management Plans. Public submissions for this have now been extended to Aug 30. The first draft of the LPMP is expected in November (or early 2020).

We believe Chelsea Estate Heritage Park's unique values - heritage dams and lakes, heritage landscape, "Category 1" Heritage status and large tracts of native bush connecting to several neighbouring reserves - make it iconic and deserved of:
1) An INDIVIDUAL CEHP Management Plan
2) Extra budget allocation for:
a) Repairs and Maintenance (to the standard it was when first purchased) for:
- Infrastructure - resolve landfill issues, restore lake water quality and renew stormwater and sewage
- Heritage - improve maintenance of heritage cottages, notable trees and park facilities
- Facilities - repairs to tracks, carparks, gate, bollards, etc
- Eco restoration - forest maintenance (Parks arborist) pest weed and predator control (Wildlands, currently under review)
b) A KLB work plan for additional Park Improvements (eg. install of picnic tables, logs for dog exercise area, rubbish bins, etc)
3) Premier Park or Regional Park status??

We look forward to seeing you there!
