Bereaved SI families overspend $100,000 on lawyers every week?
South Island bereaved families, that is.
Every day, the Christchurch High Court gets 25-30 probate applications to process, forwarded from Wellington where they all start. Some are for North Island applications. So let's say 20 are South Island. That's (say) 100 per week.
I haven't (yet) found a South Island lawyer who charges less than $1500 for a probate application. Some charge $3000. (Tell me if you know differently.)
In most cases, Kiwilaw will provide the paperwork for $400. It takes about an hour, or less. That's a reasonable hourly rate for a lawyer.
$400 compared with $1500 or $3000. 100 per week. Do the math.
(If you dare, then do the math for a year.)
