The Upper Hutt Blockhouse, located in the rohe of Te Ātiawa Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika, was built in 1860 in the shadow of conflict between government forces and Māori in Taranaki. EXPLORE THE BLOCKHOUSE Discover the mystery behind one of Wellington’s remaining buildings associated with the New Zealand Wars. Now adjacent to Heretaunga College, the Blockhouse was originally set in the centre of the Upper Hutt settlement. • Look through the loop holes, originally the only way to see out. • See how the gravel filled walls would have protected the Blockhouse against gunfire.
