The Navy Band is an extremely versatile ensemble of professional musicians. The Band's primary role is to perform as a Military Concert Band, providing music for the ceremonial, public relations, recruiting and entertainment requirements of the Royal New Zealand Navy. However, due to the diverse nature of engagements the Band undertakes, many varied groups such as the Big Band, Rock Band, Jazz Combo, Brass Quintet, Saxophone and Woodwind Ensemble. The Navy Band has a maximum of 32 full time musicians and an ever growing reserves base. With the Band's ability to provide high quality entertainment, it is in high demand both locally and internationally. Over the last eighteen months Band members or ensembles have toured Korea, Japan, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Canada, Turkey, England and Australia. The Navy Band is based at HMNZS PHILOMEL in Devonport on Auckland’s North Shore. Rehearsals take place in an extensive purpose built facility which includes numerous individual practise rooms, ensemble facilities, an industry standard recording studio and a Concert Band auditorium. The daily routine is similar to that of other service personnel, but often includes after hours performances during evenings and weekends. Naval musicians do not serve at sea, however there is a requirement to occasionally travel both nationally and internationally.
