Established in 2022, Mekar Bhuana Aotearoa (MBA) is a community-based Balinese music and dance organisation that has the aim of spreading the vision of Mekar Bhuana Centre in Bali further around the world by setting up a permanent presence in Wellington. Founders Vaughan and Evie aim to educate the New Zealand public about the beauty of traditional Balinese gamelan music and dance that in Bali itself remains endangered. MBA teaches lessons, workshops and cultural immersion programmes as well as performs in schools, communities and at events. MBA aims to be a gateway between the Aotearoa and Bali, reinforcing and creating increased awareness about the historical connection between Polynesian and Indonesian cultures through community education programmes and performance.
