The Great Kererū Count is an annual nationwide collaboration between WWF-New Zealand, Wellington City Council, Victoria University of Wellington and Kererū Discovery.
It’s such a simple and fun way to support New Zealand’s native birds – just step outdoors and look around you!
From the 23nd of September to September 2018, it’s time to count the New Zealand native pigeon - also known as the kererū.
From the depths of the bush to local gardens and parks, keep an eye on the sky as you make the most of the great outdoors over coming week.
Did you know that kererū are called the ‘gardeners of the skies’? It’s because they spread the seeds of native fruit trees. They play an important role in New Zealand’s unique ecosystem. Watch this short film to find out more about these unique birds.
You can report sightings on www.greatkererucount.nz...
Scientists will use data from the Great Kererū Count to build a more accurate picture of bird numbers, distribution and behaviours. This will help us understand how best to protect them.
Make sure you let your friends and whānau know about the count on social media using the #GreatKereruCount hashtag too.
Happy spotting!

It is an enormous area and the current Management Plan outlines the key values of the reserves and guides how the Council will manage and maintain the various spaces and places.
The first Management Plan for this area was issued in 2004 and is currently being reviewed with a new issue planned for 2018. In the Tawa area there is an initial consultation drop-in workshop happening on Saturday 18th November, 10am - midday at the Linden Social Centre.
In particular this review will add the newly purchased Forest of Tane Block to the Outer Green Belt and plan for future track networks in the area. Come on down to learn more and have a say.
For further background see the attached letter and the web site wellington.govt.nz.... There is also a short online survey where you can quickly and easily give the Council your thoughts – responses by 24th November please.
