Ivy was here.
IVY WAS HERE.
I took this photo in Japan in the 1960s and a copy more than 1 metre tall has been hanging in my home for decades. It still gives me pleasure every day.
Some of you may remember the graffiti, especially widespread in the US where it started - "Kilroy was here". It was very popular during W.W II. (James Kilroy was a quality inspector of riveting on ships being built and wrote that after he had completed his examination.) A variation of the WWII graffiti seemed perfect for my image.
Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝
In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”

Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
