Governments changes to WorkSafe
The changes recently announced change the focus of WorkSafe to “helping duty-holders do what is proportionate to the risks and avoiding over-compliance”.
In New Zealand, there were 62 workplace deaths in the last measured year. There were between 750-900 “Work-related health deaths”. These are “caused by long-term exposure to hazards and illness caused by acute injury”.
Our Workplace fatality rate is 60% higher than Australia and over 500% higher than the UK. Our serious injury rate is 35% higher than Australia and more than 330% higher than the UK.
Yet again the government is moving NZ in the wrong direction.

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
