Arming Police Could Be Alarming
With National-ACT gaining as prospectives to Govern NZ after the next general elections, don't buy into what probably will be one of their platforms: arming the police ie gun carrying by all police whilst on duty.
I believe that lethal weapons such as guns and rifles attract the same and the idea that a person maybe, could be, probably armed when confronted by police is a recipe to shoot first (and ask questions later).
During 2016-2021 in the USA upwards of 500 UNARMED ( not even carrying a knife) drivers and passengers in vehicles were shot to death by police after being stopped for a non violent traffic transgression however minor, or no particular offence at all. Most of those killed were African-Americans.
Now that is not to say the same tragic statistics and circumstances and strong rascist overtones would occur in NZ should we have armed police as a norm, but you get the drift.

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝
In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”
We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?
Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.

Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
