Stoic Week 2021 - Stoicism and Well-being

Graeme Wilson from Christchurch Stoics

This year, Stoic Week focuses on 7 key Stoic ideas that are relevant to well-being, focusing on one theme each day:

1. Control - there are some things we can control and other things we cannot control.

2. Emotions - It is our interpretations that affect us, not events.

3. Character and Virtues - The Stoics emphasised 4 key virtues: wisdom, courage, self-control (or moderation), and justice.

4. Caring for Ourselves and Others - From learning how to care for ourselves properly to extending our care to all others

5. Seeing the Big Picture - Research supports the view that people with values that go beyond themselves are happier than those obsessed with themselves as well as the benefit of being able to change perspective.

6. Stoic it up! - There are many ways in which Stoicism can help, whatever your level of commitment.

7. Creating Your Stoic Toolkit - Stoicism is a framework for thinking rationally and ethically about how to lead a good life.

Enrollment is open now for this free course and the introductory material is available. See: learn.modernstoicism.com...

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?

Addictive Eaters Anonymous

After ten years of depression, my life had hit rock bottom

I remember being ‘different’ around food for most of my life. This included things such as being the person who had two cream buns at morning tea when everyone else had one; eating icing sugar by the spoonful directly from the packet; and being the family member who went into the kitchen after dinner to eat the leftovers. There are numerous other examples – too many to list. I could overeat anything. If I couldn’t get my preferred favourites (e.g. chocolate), I’d be eating the vegetables.
