Historic Kopu Bridge welcomes Tour Aotearoa Cycling Brevet
When the first wave of the 2021 Tour Aotearoa Cycling Brevet departs Cape Reinga on Sunday 21st February, participants will be heading for Bluff on a 3,000km journey which will bring them over the Hauraki Rail Trail to Kōpū. The Historic Kōpū Bridge’s gates will be open to welcome them to our area, weather permitting, from 7am to 3pm (or later, volunteers permitting) from 21st February to 5th March. Tour Aotearoa participants will be just over 500km from Cape Reinga when they reach Kōpū, and about 2,500km from their destination. For a few weeks, the Historic Kōpū Bridge will be one of the most photographed heritage structures in the country. Throughout this period, the bridge is open to everyone: cyclists, walkers, joggers, birdwatchers… or if you have some tales to tell about the old days on the bridge, come along and share them with the volunteers. Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
