Wind gusts spin car on Remutaka Hill Rd

Reporter Community News

A woman whose car was spun around by the wind twice on the Remutaka Hill Rd said the State Highway 2 route was too dangerous and should have been closed on Tuesday.
Gusts of up to 135 kmh blasted the summit of the road connecting Upper Hutt and South Wairarapa making for a hairy crossing for many motorists on Tuesday.
Waka Kotahi issued a warning on Tuesday afternoon via Twitter saying it might close the road at short notice due to high winds, but it remained open.
Regional transport systems manager Mark Owen said they were monitoring conditions on the hill, but the wind did not reach their threshold of consistently reaching gust speeds of over 140 kmh over at least a period of half an hour, which would trigger a closure.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!

This initiative helps stop plastic from reaching our oceans and makes our waterways cleaner and safer for everyone.

We want to know: Should this be rolled out across all coastal cities in Aotearoa? And more importantly… would you get involved? 💚

Want the details? The Post has you covered.
