Avondale College brings in Cambridge law

Caryn Wilkinson Reporter from Community News

Avondale College is believed to be the first school in New Zealand to teach the Cambridge International law syllabus.

Teacher Farhanah Jeewa said the AS and A level law syllabus from Cambridge is ideal for students interested in reading law at university.

"We study the English legal system, which is similar to the New Zealand system," she said.

Introducing the syllabus this year stemmed from Jeewa's legal background.

Students at the Auckland secondary school are learning how laws are made, interpreted and adapted.

They love taking part in the mock trials, she said.

"We complete two different trials and students get to see the role of each person within the legal system.

"It is an enjoyable experience to see them become much more confident in the second trial.”
