Contribution made by Major Steven Powell recognised
A New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) technology facility in Lower Hutt has been named in honour of the serving officer who drove its inception before his untimely death.
The Major Steven Powell Defence Information Services and Communications Operation Centre (DISOC) in Petone was dedicated earlier this month.
The centre is focused on the support of NZDF-wide technology and communication.
Major Powell, who died aged 53 in January following an illness, was instrumental in setting it up from scratch. He recruited and built a team which is now a professional, highly valued and productive asset, said Colonel Paul Dragicevich, his former commanding officer.
Major Powell enlisted in the New Zealand Army in 1984 as a regular soldier and rose through the ranks during a wide-ranging career. He served in Cambodia, Bougainville and Timor-Leste.

Speed limits around NaeNae
Hi Neighbors, Just a heads up, I have just received a $170 fine for driving at 50km on Rata Street Naenae on a SUNDAY Morning. I wrote to NZTA pointing out and sending in a photo of sign stating that it was 30km on school days between those hours, but they said that the whole of Rata Street and some surrounding streets are 30km 24/7 and have been for over a year. Did I miss this been advised by council? Always good to be informed. Merry Christmas to all
