Should more schools change the way they teach children to read?
A community meeting in Motueka on Wednesday evening is due to feature discussion with a Massey University professor, whose research shows a more phonics-based approach is needed to teaching literacy in schools. Parents lobbying nationwide for the change to "structured literacy", which teaches reading and writing consecutively, say phonics books should replace the "Ready to Read" books most schools use to help children learn to read.
