Wellington's Thistle Inn turns 180
A history of wharfies, Māori chiefs, and a stable fire - Wellington's Thistle Inn has turned 180.
Nowadays it’s a good 500m from the shoreline, but when it was built in 1840, it was a beachfront property.
In it’s 180 years in business, the pub had seen some famed clientele.
Before the harbour was filled in to reclaim space, Māori chief Te Rauparaha would beach his waka on the shore and stop in for a drink, friends with then-owner William Couper; today’s owners had even verified the tale with iwi.
One of the rooms is named after author Katherine Mansfield, who wrote the inn into one of her stories, “Leves Amores”.
