Akaroa school students restoring isolated reserve in Akaroa Harbour

Jake Kenny Reporter from Community News

A group of Year 13 students at Akaroa area school are coming together to restore the
reserve at Hammond Point, Te Umu Te Rehua, in Akaroa Harbour.

The students were concerned about climate change and wanted to take on a practical project.

“It’s a great opportunity to be able to take action locally and hopefully get the community involved with us," student Lochlyn Gilberd said.

The school has signed an agreement with the Department of Conservation which gives the school a management role in looking after the reserve.

This week, the students will lead a junior class of Year 7 and 8 students to plant twenty native trees at the reserve.

The students will become Kiatiaki (guardians) of the reserve.
