Council Rates Affordability Becoming An Issue For Median Income Households.

A Southland District Council report says areas of some towns like Otautau have rates that are more than 5 per cent of median household income.

I suspect that this may be an issue for us in Horowhenua, where median household income in the 2013 Census Statistics was only $21,800. With the likely average household rates in Horowhenua around $2,000 or more, rates could be approaching 10% of the median household income. Lower income people may be pushed further into poverty by the level of rates? What do other ratepayers think? Should our Council carry out and publish similar research?
