Long-time North Canterbury whitebaiter questions moves to regulate fishery
A North Canterbury whitebaiter of almost 60 years says the Government is taking the wrong approach in its efforts to regulate the fishery.
Proposals out for public consultation include banning exports, restricting the equipment used, limiting upstream fishing, reducing the length of the season and closing some rivers for up to 10 years. DOC recommends the season be shortened two weeks, to between August 15 to November 15. Consultation closes on March 16.
Ashley Fishermen's Association president Doug Guthrie, who has been whitebaiting around North Canterbury since he was 13, said fingers were being pointed at fishermen but the underlying problem affecting fish stocks was a lack of water and a loss of habitat.
