PUKEKAWA SCHOOL'S 125th JUBILEE

Sylvia from Tuakau

Pukekawa School will celebrate 125 years of educating children in its lovely rural setting in October this year. Former pupils and staff who haven’t visited for some time will notice a lot of changes. The main classroom block still looks pretty much the same, but the staffroom and office are in different locations and the grounds have been beautifully landscaped, with colourful murals further enhancing the plantings. It has a lovely feel to it and if you have a few moments, it’s worth checking out the school’s website – www.pukekawa.school.nz....

These days there are around 110 pupils who go up to Year 6 (previously known as Standard 4). Back in 1957 the roll was around 130, but that included Forms 1 and 2, so it has remained pretty steady over the past 60 years.

On 17 October Pukekawa School will host a gathering to celebrate its 125th anniversary with a formal welcome and performances by today’s pupils, followed by an informal mix and mingle opportunity and photos taken. The annual Calf Club day will take place the day before. Anyone holding fond memories of training their own calf or lamb will be most welcome to attend.

Poll: Should we ditch daylight saving? 🕰️

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

First introduced in New Zealand in 1927 with the passing of the Summer Time Act, it's what we know as 'Daylight Saving' and this year it ends on the first Sunday in April.

While we do get to sleep in this time around, some people would like to scrap the clock tinkering for good.

And why? Some evidence suggests the time changes are bad for our health as they mess with sleep patterns leading to short-term fatigue and affecting mood. Meanwhile the hour change is frustrating for farmers and a nightmare for getting the littlies to sleep. But what's your take?
