DEATH OF NEWLANDS

Margaret from Paparangi

URBAN SANCTUARY - 4 - 6 Oswald Crescent, 21 2 & 3 Bdrm Units to be built!!
2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom Property type: Townhouse Enquiries over $595,000 & 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms Townhouse Enquiries over $695,000. This beautiful development offers a collection of 21 contemporary styled two and three bedroom townhouses with off street parking via a private laneway, designed by multi award winning architect Sheppard and Rout.

UTTER CRAP!! Check out the listing on Trade Me, the Council has obviously given permission for the development to go ahead but as you will see the 'off street parking via a private laneway' only allows for 1 car! It doesn't take much intelligence to realise that 2 to 3 bdrm dwellings will attract a minimum possibility of 2 to 3 cars so where does the Council think the rest of the rest of the cars are going to be parked?? Kiss goodbye to Newlands as we know it, the council is hell bent on killing the centre of Newlands, with no consideration for the infrastructure, traffic etc etc. Just wait for another 2 years when there will be a further 25 'units' built on Newlands Road, where the old NorthPac used to be, combine that with the 16 "units' under development on the cnr of Batchelor and Atkinson Street and the Centre of Newlands is effectively 'screwed'.

Just remember this is election year for the local council so the ideal opportunity to get rid of Justin Lester, Peter Gilberd, Malcolm Sparrow, Jill Day and the rest of the current council who have done all they can to suffocate Newlands, the way they have done in Johnsonville, with utter contempt and scant regard for the ratepayers that have lived in these areas for longer than they have been in office!!!

Poll: Are you still heading to your local for your caffeine fix, or has the $$ changed your habits? ☕

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Wellington’s identity is built on its cafe culture, but with costs climbing, that culture is under pressure. We’ve seen the headlines about recent closures, and it’s a tough pill to swallow along with a $6+ coffee.

We all want our favourite spots to stay open, but we also have to balance our own budgets ⚖️

We want to know: How are you handling the "coffee math" in 2026? Are you still heading to your local for a chat and a caffeine fix, or has the cost of living changed your habits?

Keen to read more about "coffee math"? The Post has you covered.
