Should Taxpayer Compensate Beachfront Owners For Sea level Rise?
To what extent – if at all – should the taxpayer bailout owners of beachfront properties when they become uninsurable or unlivable because of sea level rise? Equity is important and so is support for those affected by disasters. But there is a moral hazard that people will continue to take the risk of buying or remaining in a coastal property in the knowledge that they will be compensated. These are tough ethical policy decisions the government is currently grappling with.
