Bug man's visit to Whangarei

Annette Lambly-Robinson Reporter from Whangārei Leader

During his three day stay in Whangarei, Bug Man, Ruud Kleinpaste stopped in at Kiwi North where he was put to work carefully following the nationally standard recipe to make the kiwi food for the day.

Kevin Saxton, Kiwi North husbandry team leader and Northtec Environmental Science student Courtney du Preez who is completing her 90 hours practicum here at Kiwi North thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

The diet is lean beef mince, oxheart, cat biscuits, vitamin mix, corn, peas, carrot, apple, banana, currants and oil. It is the same in all the captive facilities to reduce variables and reduce stress if the birds are moved from one location to another.

Later in the day Kleinpaste took a walk in the Pukenui forest with its rangers.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
