SH 2 Karangahake Gorge to close overnight tonight

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

State Highway 2 between Paeroa and Waihi will close from 9pm to 3am tonight (Wednesday 5 September), and the NZ Transport Agency is advising people to check the website for news when the road will reopen.

Contractors need to blast an overhanging rock from above the highway in the Karangahake Gorge. There will be cordons at Paeroa and Waitawheta Bridge.

The road will close from 9pm, and open as soon as debris has been cleared – possibly single lane – as soon as possible.

Alternative routes are via SH27/29 over the Kaimai Range. Or via SH25/25A.

The Transport Agency urges people to make sure they are through the gorge before 9pm, and to check on the website before attempting to travel in this area.

The Press investigates the growing reliance on your unpaid labour.
