Donating to the Sallies

Lauren from Feilding

I had an interesting and sad situation when dealing with the Salvation Army Op Shop in Feilding. I have been a regular donor for a long time but no more.
I, inadvertently, donated a book that wasn’t mine to donate and when my sister went back to the store to try to buy it back or retrieve it, she was met with unhelpful people that would not look for it. Here’s the reason why.
I wrote to the Sallies expressing my disappointment on how they deal with mistakes and received a reply that was polite but explained clearly that most of the books donated were dumped the following Friday. Who knew?
Wonder who gets to decide on what is a keepable book.
There must be some tragic loss going there.
My donating to the Sallies are over. Now on the quest to find another Op shop that may want my discarded goods. Never trash, reuseable goods or they wouldn’t be going to be donated. If, I find these stores here the same policy, then it’s the end of donating for me.
P.S. The Captain from the Sallies said they had to dump because of the sheer volume they receive!

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
