Contracting young apprentises

Linley from South Taupo

Just wanted to put this out to public discussion.
With trade industries taking on / employing apprentices, is it common practice for employers to ask these young kids, to contract to them, instead of putting them onto a payroll and paying them wages?
Surely it is a bit much to ask our kids, who are generally not long out of School, who have no experience working this way, and are looking to their new employer for guidance and training.
Surely to ask an employee to work under contract, you would expect them to be fully qualified and a few years experience under their belts.
I realise that this practise might not be illegal, but surely it's not ethical. To ask our kids to be responsible for their own Taxes and Acc levies etc, doesn't seem right to me.

Be interested to know how everyone else feels about this, or if they even know that this goes on.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.

This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
Do you think NZ should follow suit? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.
