When the floodwaters and political rhetoric drain away, Edgecumbe locals are left with sour taste

Reporter Sunday Star Times

HEARTLAND SPECIAL: Struck by quakes, floods and economic downturns, parts of provincial New Zealand are hurting bad. Today, they challenge New Zealand's poll-happy politicians to look beyond their cities to the 'real New Zealand'.

For 48 years Richard Ririnui has called Edgecumbe home. Now he is calling it quits on the town where he raised his six children.

His brick house at 20 Rata Avenue sits as a time capsule to the devastation the town suffered on April 6. Save for patches of wild grass, a red sticker and a now bulging lemon tree it stands exactly as it did when the flood waters subsided.
