Poll: Do you think wharf jumping should be banned, or is it a Kiwi right of passage?

Reporter Rodney Times

Auckland Council won't ban jumping at popular water spots, despite fears that swimmers could end up dead or seriously injured.

A number of young men have become quadriplegics after jumping of wharves and suffering spinal injuries.

However previous attempts by the council to ban diving at danger spots have failed, and it now takes a different approach with educational signs pointing out the risks.

ACC saw 230 claims last year for injuries suffered at jumping or diving structures, ranging from cuts and bruises to surgery for shattered ankles and damaged spines, and spinal unit consultant Rick Acland believes it's "almost criminal" to support wharf jumping.

Have you ever been injured jumping from Orewa wharf or the cliffs at Re Beach or Little Manly?

And what do you reckon? Should it be banned?

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
