Rural fire officers honoured

Reporter Clutha Leader

Waihola's long-serving rural fire officers were honoured at a 25th anniversary ceremony in the township on Saturday night.

Clutha District mayor Bryan Cadogan presented certificates to past and present brigade members. About 90 members, their families, and neighbouring brigade members attended the ceremony. Among others receiving long-service medals was founder member and current Waihola deputy chief Gerard Keene, receiving a 25-year service star.

Keene said it was a great honour to be recognised with the award. "This is a great little community to serve. It's been demanding at times, but always rewarding, " he said.

Keene's chief, Waihola controller Brent Goodsir, paid credit to his reliability and long service.

"Gerard has one of our highest incident attendance rates and has always been a hands-on, dedicated officer. He helps keep everything ticking along in orderly fashion."

The Waihola Brigade continued to thrive, Keene said.

"We've got six new members training at the moment. I've got a few more years yet, but it's good to see the younger ones stepping up."
