Today is Armistice Day, marking the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when WWI ended.
During the war 100,444 Kiwi soldiers and nurses travelled overseas to fight for King and Country. More than 16,500 died.
As a tribute to the sacrifices of Kiwi service men and women, reporter Joanna Griffiths and Southland-based historian Iain Davidson searched through stacks of service records of some extraordinary Southlanders.

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
