On 10 April 1968, in appalling weather conditions, the Lyttelton -Wellington ferry Wahine hit Barrett Reef in Wellington Harbour , listed and sunk. Fifty-three of the 734 passengers and crew aboard the Wahine died in the disaster.

In late 2015 several survivors and a rescuers set up The Wahine 50 Charitable Trust to plan for the disaster's 50th anniversary, gather stories from those involved, and look at some form of legacy.

On Tuesday, 10 April 2018, the Wahine 50 commemorative programme will unfold: dawn service; choral tributes in Wellington Railway Station and at a service by the Wahine mast memorial; a very rare Steam Past of 50 boats in Wellington's inner harbour; a public display that focuses on the future and how to prepare for disaster; Wahine displays in schools and the Wellington Museum, and more.

The day will be a time to remember those who died, a time to thank the many who helped rescue and support survivors, and an opportunity to look to the future.
